Procrastination Pt. 2

I had a thought today about the kind of people who procrastinate (of which I am one)… We really shouldn’t have clean offices or workspaces and here’s the reason why: the chances are pretty good that we’re also the kind of people who suffer from “out of sight, out of mind” syndrome. That being the case, we need to make sure that the things we’re procrastinating, are at the very least staying in front of us so we do eventually do them.

For instance, In my office I have three filing cabinets full of files that need to be organized, music that needs to be sifted through, and CD’s that need to be ripped to my computer and stored. But, since they’re out of my sight, I never think to do those things. From time to time I will remember that I need to work on that, but I’m quickly drawn to the other things that are in my line of sight and I do those instead.

So, here’s my piece of completely unheard of advice. Be messy. At least keep your desk somewhat messy, so you can see the things you need to work on. Find some organizing resources that talk about organizing styles, and find a visual style that works for you.

Here’s to the mess.
